The time edging up to a major race is a challenging one one where youre at the cusp of peak fitness and susceptibility to injury. Its a time when you want to stay on the right side of that cusp: peak fitness.

If you are like many runners, you feel totally confused about what to eat. You listen to a plethora of nutrition experts, spend time reading food labels, and then try to piece the information together to build a better runners diet. Yet, you end up with lots of questions.

Here are Nancy Clark's tips for understanding how many carbs, protein and fat to have in your diet.

The WMA indoor champs wrapped up today in Kamloops. In their press release the organizers singled out three women for their outstanding performances: Olga Kotelko, Phil Raschker and Marie Kay. Read more at Carmel's blog...
Mar 5, 1000 feet - Can that affect performance?

I wanted to share this note from Jack Daniels, because a number of runners now at the World Masters Track and Field Championships (Kamloops) have written me, saying that their times are slower than anticipated.....they wondered whether the 1100 feet of altitude there might have affected performance if they have been training at sea level.
Read more at Cathy's blog...

There was plenty of hot sprinting at Kamloops today including a world record. Canadian Olga Kotelko set the new WR in W90 60M. So Cal Strider Brenda Matthews (W60) claimed the gold over Phil Raschker and home team Canada scored the most gold Read more at Carmel's blog...
Just got word from Peter Horan in New Zealand. Bernie Portenski has smashed another W60 World Record for the 10,000 meters this morning (Sunday 28 Feb). Last week she broke the W60 5000 meters World Record in a time of 18.51 at Newtown Park, Wellington Masters two day meeting. Today at the same venue she smashed the 10,000 meters W60 by 16 seconds in a time of 39min and 5 seconds in windy conditions. Read more at Carmel's blog...
I've just read a couple of good articles on mental training. March's Runners World features US distance runner Kara Goucher's battle with confidence. Many of us can relate to Kara's struggles, as we've doubted ourselves at the start line, during a race or after a poor result. I love her honesty.
Read more at Carmel's blog...
It's no surprise. Everyone seems inspired by the Olympics -- at least by one performance. Every one of the graduate students in my competitive performance and goal setting class at Boston College -- a mix of current and former professional athletes and executives ages 23 to 58 -- say they've been moved to reflect on their own dreams, regardless of whether they're professional, athletic, or personal.

Its been a challenge as she was injured and unfit when I started with her a month ago. But she is such a mature athlete and so easy to coach.

Alyssa is such a beautiful young runner with loads of potential in the sprints and maybe eventually the 400. Her running style reminds me a lot of Marion Jones. Read more at Pam's blog...

Many people say their best races have been due to a positive mental outlook. Try two approaches and see which works better for you: 1 Dissociation and 2 Association.
I dont have time to fit yoga into my training routine! Many runners love the benefits of yoga but find it hard to fit a class into their routine particularly if theyre already logging many miles. Heres a suggestion: warm-up for your run with four Salutes to the Sun.
Runner or not, youve probably seen Suzy Favor Hamilton the blond, pony-tailed, perfectly abbed Olympian if not on TV, then in a magazine maybe Vogue, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone, or Harpers Bazaar? As an open runner Hamilton seemed the picture, in fact the epitome, of success and happiness. Underneath, there were private struggles.
Read Dr. Cathy Utzschneider's interview here...

Not all of us are born athletic. Some have to work at it. For Leslie Gray exercising didnt come naturally. She actually avoided it for most of her life. She didnt like it, didnt need it. Then at 59 Leslie took up the challenge of running. She felt slow, it often hurt. It didnt come easily but encouraged by her new friends in the running community she stuck it out when others gave up. Leslie discovered a whole new world and a way of life. Now shes hooked. Heres Leslies running journey
Some runners want to lose weight quickly for a race. Watch out it backfires, says Nancy Clark. If don't mind regaining the weight quickly, you can indeed starve yourself for a few days. It's better to lose weight gradually and keep it off for the rest of your life. Here are Nancy's tips for sustainable weight loss.

Lauras recent win at the USATF Masters Club X-C champs drew lots of attention. One of her teammates was astonished to learn of Lauras numerous athletic deeds.
