Mar 5, 2010, 1000 feet - Can that affect performance?

I wanted to share this note from Jack Daniels, because a number of runners now at the World Masters Track and Field Championships (Kamloops) have written me, saying that their times are slower than anticipated.....they wondered whether the 1100 feet of altitude there might have affected performance if they have been training at sea level.

Feb 26, 2010, Mental Edge

I've just read a couple of good articles on mental training. March's Runners World features US distance runner Kara Goucher's battle with confidence. Many of us can relate to Kara's struggles, as we've doubted ourselves at the start line, during a race or after a poor result. I love her honesty.

Feb 18, 2010, Olympics inspiring you?

It's no surprise. Everyone seems inspired by the Olympics -- at least by one performance. Every one of the graduate students in my competitive performance and goal setting class at Boston College -- a mix of current and former professional athletes and executives ages 23 to 58 -- say they've been moved to reflect on their own dreams, regardless of whether they're professional, athletic, or personal. Feb 12, 2010, Coach Pam

My life has been a bit hectic lately. I was approached by one of the young athletes, Alyssa Conley, who I coached a couple of years ago. It’s been a challenge as she was injured and unfit when I started with her a month ago. But she is such a mature athlete and so easy to coach.

Alyssa is such a beautiful young runner with loads of potential in the sprints and maybe eventually the 400. Her running style reminds me a lot of Marion Jones. Read more at Pam's blog...

Hey, I read these tips in other places but when I want some serious reading, Runners Times is my “go to mag”.

This month lists the 09 masters of the year, the best age-graded performances and a stack of masters interviews.

Too many runners are at war with food and their bodies. In their quest to attain the “perfect body” that is leaner, lighter and presumably faster and better, they develop eating patterns that are far from peaceful. Read Nancy Clark's advice on diet problems here.

Hey, I nearly added an extra page to list all of her achievements. But of course there's more to Laura than just running. Check out her story here...
