Check out this great story from NPR's Tom Goldman on two women track & field athletes who said, "no to drugs". One, Katherine Hamilton, gave up her sport at 19. Both made a return to competition at this year's Masters Nationals in Sacramento.

Congrats to Liz Palmer with her American Record in the W50 80m hurdles (12.44) at this weekend's Rocky Mountain Masters Games. Liz has worked hard on her technique and lots of strength training in the gym. All that hard work is paying off big time!

Summer running isn’t over without the Falmouth Road Race. This year the women’s race was won by Wude Ayalew Yimer of Ethiopia in a stunning time of 35:46. Joanna Harper recently caught up with World Masters Champion and W40 steeple World Record holder Lisa Valle. Lisa was born in 1966, the year of the horse in the Chinese zodiac. Aug 7, 2010, Exercise Boosts Cancer Survival Rate
Did you know that among 269 cancer patients who exercised for at least 3 months, the cancer survival rate was 93%? This is higher than the national average of 66%. In the breast cancer group, exercisers have a 95% survival rate, as compared to the national average of 89%.

Sisyphus was a character in Greek Mythology who had been sentenced by the gods to roll a rock up a hill for all eternity. In the final day of the Masters T&F Champs in Sacramento, there was plenty of exciting action in the 1500's. Mary Harada set her second W75 American Record for the meet. Sabra Harvey shattered the World Record. Lisa Valle won her third national title in a fab W40 race.

Suzi MacLeod (W75) sizzled on the track, matching Sacramento's heat with her own hot performances. On Friday Suzi broke the World Record in the W75 400m with her time of 1:25.40. On Saturday she set an American Record in the 800m with 3:25.73.

How do you prepare for the Masters National Champs? Sprinter Kathy Jager (W67) spent a few months in Africa. Kathy is a nurse, who lives in Arizona, and volunteered for a 2-month stint in Uganda earlier this year. It was something she'd always wanted to do and the time seemed right.

Another scorching day at the track in Sacramento (mid 90's) and the action was hot in the Women's 2k Steeple.
First up Kathy Martin (58) broke her own W55 American record running 8:13.10.Then in the W35 to W54 race two records fell. Current World Champion (800/1500/2k steeple) Lisa Valle (44) set a new W40 World Record with a stunning time of 6:51.92. Read more at Carmel's blog...
Jul 23, 2010, Mary Harada Takes US Record as Women fly in the 5k's
Day 1 at the USATF Masters T&F champs - 5,000m finals. Women ages 55 to 79 raced at 7.00am. Now I'm not one to wish my life away but I'd have loved to be older today and run at that time. I imagine the conditions were cooler. Of course these women had to get up at the crack of dawn and think about racing when some of us (me) were still in bed!
Liberty's Mary Harada, who has just moved up to W75 and has already set records in the mile, ran 26:55.11 for a new American Record.

This week-end's National Masters Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, CA is proof again that masters women's running is thriving -- as is men's. No fewer than 1,425 athletes ages 30-96 will be competing for national titles from Thursday through Sunday.

After a hard run, are you better off drinking a large amount of water at one time to replace sweat losses—or smaller amounts of water every 30 minutes for four hours? Either works. In January 2009 Portland runner Kelly Jaske burst onto the national running scene by placing 2nd in the USATF half marathon championships in Houston Texas. She beat the likes of Colleen De Reuck and Amy Rudolph in the race and captured the attention of many fans of the sport.
