Sabra Harvey followed her W60 world record 800m run on Saturday with an American Record in the 1500m this Sunday.
In only her second nationals track meet, Sabra won in 5:22.50.
L to R: Jeanne Daprano, Sabra Harvey, Nancy Rollins, Thelma Wilson, Suzi MacLeod & Mary Kretchmar
Asked if she was gunn’ for the record Sabra said, “Sure was, I love to push the limit. Normally I run 5 and 10k’s and my favorite is cross country. But I’m having so much fun here.” Next stop for Sabra is the Senior Games in California.
Nancy Rollins (W62) was second behind Sabra in the 1500m (6:06.20). Nancy’s a marathon runner and normally is out in front with no women to push her. “I almost shed tears of happiness racing against Saber in the 5K on Thursday. Winning is great but it’s so much better to have someone to strive against.”
The closest women’s 1500m was W50. Debbie Lee in her usual gutsy style took the lead from the start. Cheryl Bellaire and Joanna Harper tucked in behind. Debbie held her front position until the final 300 when Cheryl challenged her down the back straight. They fought it out until the 200m when Cheryl let fly with a burst of speed to win in 5:31.53. As Cheryl told us, “Debbie did exactly what I wanted her to do and I knew I had the finishing kick”. In the last 50m Debbie stumbled while Joanna stormed past to grab the silver (5:33.80). Debbie was third in 5:34.14.
The W40 1500m had the feel of a European track meet where the designated rabbit sets the pace for the field. In this case it was W35 5K winner Breeda Willis (W39) charging to a fast first 400 of 73 seconds. Christine Olen (W40) kept Rita in sight while the trio from So Cal Track, Christine Reaser, Lisa Valle and Sanya Syrstad worked together again. Soon Rita was running solo to a great overall win of 4:31.35. Christine Olen, coming off her second place at in Eugene, won W40 in 4:45.98. Lisa got the silver in 4:58.70 and Sanya the bronze in 5:03.28.
