Watching the action, talking track with friends, what could be better? Well, running track but that’ll have to wait until the Achilles heels. As friend W56 sprinter Jeanne Bowman enthused “it’s great to be here with people who get why we do this”.
A woman working at the Holiday Inn doesn’t get it. She asked Jeanne “Do you get paid to do this?” Surprised by the answer she then pointed at a 75-year-old, “But why does he still do it?”
But here there’s no need to explain when you’re hangin’ with people who share your passion. Who sympathize or understand the injuries and the setbacks. And celebrate your victories.
Brenda Mathews(left) and Jeanne Bowman Perhaps the woman from the Holiday Inn needed to be at the track today (Saturday, July 11).
Jeanne’s Southern California Striders team mate Brenda Mathews blitzed in the W60 100m, winning in 14.60. Next was W55 and it’s Jeanne’s turn. “I’m lining up thinking these women are maniac fast. The announcer says this it’ll be a race between two, Karla del Grande and Rita Hanscom. Oh brother, I don’t want to look the fool. But I’m off at the gun.” Canadian Karla (13.32) won over Rita (13.80) with Jeanne lunging for third (14.86) to get the silver as the second American.
In the W40 800m the trio from So Cal Track put on a show. Christine Reaser battled the wind early with Sanya Syrstad and defending champ Lisa Valle hot on her heels. Christine and Sanya traded places a few times and Christine led at the bell. With the strong wind in the final back straight Sanya and Lisa took off leaving Christine. Lisa was patient “I knew what Sanya would do so I waited and kicked.” Lisa won in 2:23.31 from Sanya (2:24.66) and Christine (2:34.79).
In the W45 800m Deb Conley from Boulder, Colorado guided blind runner Luanne Burke round the first 200. When she got Luanne safely into lane one Deb stepped off the track. Word has it that someone from USATF didn’t want Luanne to run thinking she’d be lapped.
The Athena women Lorraine Jasper (2:26.72) and Terri Cassel (2:30.82) finished one-two with Lorraine leading from gun to tape. Luanne ran strongly and got a huge cheer from the crowd as she finished in 2:54.71, never in danger of being lapped.
