Aussie, Anne Ziogas loves going the distance.
She says it gives her head space and time to herself.
She runs her hometown Melbourne Marathon every year (body permitting).
She celebrated her 50th birthday, a few years ago by running the King Island 32K. And this year Anne partied by running her first Comrades Marathon.
Photo courtesy of Comrades.com Sure some us prefer champagne or roses. But Anne's into sweat and pushing herself to the limit.
Besides pounding the streets, Anne's busy as a full-time school teacher, wife and mother of two teenagers. Recently she's been caring for her father-in-law who broke his hip. As Anne would say "it's a full life". Leading up to Comrades Anne was trying to survive on four hours sleep. It took its toll. Her knees decided enough! She was forced off the roads and into the pool. Not ideal preparation for one the world's toughest ultras.
Runners World describes it as "Fifty-five brutal miles, five torturous climbs, with a ruthless clock." Pull out, cancel the flight...No Way...Not Anne. Maybe she's considered crazy at times but there's plenty of admiration for her gutsy "never say die" attitude.
Anne covered the 55 miles (90kms) in 8:45:42, receiving the “Bill Rowan Medal” for finishing under 9 hours. Anne was 4th in her W50-59 age-group and 101st woman.
She's now kicking back for a few days visiting South Africa’s Safari Parks.
Congrats Anne on your courageous run.
